can't change text size after importing pdf

Hi,

I just imported a plot made by Gnuplot into ipe by first 
running pdftoipe to make an xml file, and then opening that 
file in ipe.  The problem is that any text (labels) I now 
add to the document are stuck at size "normal". I cannot 
change their size no matter what I do.

Why is this happening?
