I also agree with Gijs' suggestions! However, I now understand why IPE behaves so strangely from my point of view. Sure, if the objects have different properties, those can not easily be assigned to the toolbars. On the other hand, in all other "common" applications I am aware of, if several objects with different properties are selected, the corresponding menu/toolbar element is greyed out. But IMHO intuitively if several objects are selected, a command executed should apply to all of them (also from the contextual menu).
