pdflatex not working with ipe on el capitan

Hello:

Running ipe 7.1.8 on os X el capitan. (dmg downloaded form git:
https://github.com/otfried/ipe/tree/master/releases/7.1)

When I type in text in my figure, it tries compiling it to pdf but ipe
hangs (with the beachball) - it seems that pdflatex is not working fine
with ipe (not clear if unable to locate pdflatex or use it)

I tried disabling automatically run latex in the file menu but that brings
no change.

Pls suggest.
Apologies if this is in manual (i looked through for pdflatex but did not
find info)
