F keys in Ipe

Hi,

after a some years of neglecting ipe I've just started to use it
again. I'm now running 7.2.5 on my Ubuntu 16.04 machine but can not
find out how to set the snap origin via F1. It looks like that simply
none of the function keys are recognised. I guess I'm missing the
obvious here and perhaps somebody can point me in the right direction.
