Some more info: by setting IPEDEBUG=1, I get the following output with the drawing consisting of just "A": pdfTeX version 1.40.11 (TeX Live 2010) (forma Found binary string <7984616D3C4529860364F3F9786D0A78> Found binary string <7984616D3C4529860364F3F9786D0A78> Ipe cannot parse the PDF file produced by Pdflatex.
