For Lesstif, you can always install outside of usr/local by compiling
from the source code. It's been some time since I've used OpenMotif,
but it was also possible to install it outside of /usr/local when
compiling from the source code. With OpenMotif 2.1.30, you could
install it in another location by modifying config/cf/site.def to
change the ProjectRoot and VirtualBindingsPath definitions before
building the software. With OpenMotif 2.2.3, you could do that by
running the autogen.sh script in the source code directory,
./autogen.sh --prefix=your_preferred_directory
before building the software with
make install
