Already been down that road. I had actually forgotten that back in 2004-2005 I built an Applescript that toggled the visibility of sets of one or more layers, and exported the selections to Keynote which then exported it to a multi-page PDF. Unfortunately that was impossible to maintain. Anyway, if it's not already a feature request I'd very much like it to be.
