alpha only images

We'd like to use libpng to encoded/decode alpha-only images : 1 (8bit)
channel of alpha, no gray or rgb. At first look, there is no clear way to
do this, but perhaps there is a convention already established for this? If
no, can we discuss ways to extend png to handle this?
