Libpng was maintained as a collection of files on a computer by the
maintainer. The collections of files were turned into release
tarballs.

After many years someone contributed a script (discussions of this
script should be archived for this list) which allowed Glenn to
convert the many release tarballs into a git repository. Even after
this, the convention seemed to be to import releases into git from a
release tarball even though someone had made direct commits to the
repository.

To the best of my knowledge, the primordial git repository for libpng
is available for viewing at
"http://src.simplesystems.org/git?p=libpng.git;a=summary" and I have
daily snapshots for the filesystem in which it resides (can reproduce
the underlying git files corresponding to any day) going back to
January 1st, 2012.
