An error in INSTALL about building a git clone

Hello, all.

The libpng INSTALL file observes:

   If  you  downloaded  a  GIT  clone,  you will need to run
   ./autogen.sh  before  running  ./configure,   to   create
   "configure"  and  "Makefile.in" which are not included in
   the GIT repository.

but when I tried to follow it to the letter with my freshly-
cloned git repository,  ./autogen.sh failed with:

   ERROR: running autoreconf on an initialized system

Versioned files `configure' and `Makefile.in' are present in
the root the repository. I believe it a contradiction and  a
bug in the documentation or the setup of the git repository,
for it is initiliased, in spite of  what  the  INSTALL  file
says.
