No, I didn't.  Now I see that this buidling method  is  well
documented  in  section  III of the INSTALL file.  I had not
made it that far the first  time  because  I  stuck  at  the
./configure  step. I need only have read two more entries of
the index before rushing down the most generic, and most de-
vious, way of `autotools'. Providing pre-generated Makefiles
is a life savior becuase C build systems are often more com-
plicated than the code they build :-)

makefile.msys  did  it.  Thank you, Bob.  MinGW includes and
uses MSYS 1, by the way.
