I did that.  I now have a new repo:

It contains two branches:

1) official; this is pngcheck-2.3.0 from the sourceforge tarball with
the patch applies, IRC it is 2.4.0-beta08 or something like that.

2) development; this is my pngcheck version with the patch merged in
from 'official'

There is no 'master' branch.  The LICENSE is the text beneath the
copyright in pngcheck.c, the dates and version numbers have not been
updated either for Greg's patch or my changes.  In due course I will
change them to beta along with the copyright date.

I just dump the iTXt text with the current prbuf routine.  This will
result is corrupted UTF-8 in certain cases.  I think it's pretty easy
to fix if it is ok to insist on the 'sevenbit' option be used for
non-UTF-8 terminals.  All the systems I have are set to UTF-8 these
days, indeed, it's been a while since I encountered any ISO8859-1
output but maybe the terminal switching happens automagically.

The XML iTXt chunk produced by digikam has a UTF byte order marker
(character 0xFFFE) encoded, I assume, in UTF-8.  That strikes me as
really weird, but oh well...
