ISO 12234-3:2016 "Electronic still picture imaging — Removable memory
— Part 3: XMP for digital photography";

https://www.iso.org/obp/ui/#iso:std:iso:12234:-3:ed-1:v1:en

defines an encoding for digital image metadata.

This does *not* include a method for encoding such data within PNG.
However separately Adobe define such a method by using a text chunk
with a defined keyword, XMP:com:adobe.xmp See:

http://wwwimages.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/xmp/pdfs/XMP%20SDK%20Release%20cc-2016-08/XMPSpecificationPart3.pdf

The definition is in section 1.1.5 and a concise summary is "use a
text chunk with the keyword XML:com.adobe.xmp"

So far as I know Adobe have made no attempt to register the keyword;
this may be why the proposal was not included in ISO 12234, however
the Adobe document I reference above is Part 3 of a series of which
Part 1 is ISO 16684-1 (the other two Adobe parts are not labelled as
ISO standards.)

The keyword name is in itself reasonable and has been published. In
this case Adobe is the prime mover in XMP, XMP is an international
standard, and Adobe have documented a non-controversial (IMO) way of
putting it in a PNG file, so it is reasonable to at least document
that we know about this. Hence this proposal:

* The PNG keyword registration document should include a list of
keywords which are known to be documented in international standards
or in publicly available documents in connection with international
standards.

The expectation is that the list should merely provide a link to the
relevant documentation without comment and be updated as and when the
link to the documentation is published here. The intention is simply
to avoid duplication of effort.
