I'm not sure what you are arguing here.  If something preserves the
MakerNote when an image is cropped it has preserved garbage; the
(typically undocumented) MakerNote actually contains detailed sensor
information (possibly correlated with the lens) and a crop makes it
incomprehensible.

If you originally argued that eXIF should be safe-to-copy because you
wanted to further your insistence that it be compressed shame on you.

If you think you can compress JPEG thumbnails then, well, I deleted my comment.

You said you wanted to preserve EXIF because of the metadata, and I
agreed heartily, but I was thinking of metadata that consists of the
small stuff; author/copyright, the capitalist stuff, the information
about light levels, interesting to me because of the HDR applications,
and shutter speed and aperture; interesting to forensic scientists.

This stuff is SMALL, even by the standards of the regular twitter
animated icon (whatever, something in social media) and it can be
translated into tEXt chunks, but is currently typically lost to
humanity.

Well., eh... yes?  Right?  Isn't that what I'm saying?  It's a
standard developed by Japanese Digital Camera Manfactures, right?

I wouldn't do it this way if I was developing a file-format-neutral
meta-data format from scratch.  I mean, TIFF, seriously?

Nevertheless a file-format-independent metadata format has been
developed and successfully marketed by CIPA; it is a fait accompli, a
thing that has been done.
