A lot of distros (including gentoo) have the apng patch to libpng.
That means that any application built on libpng on those distros ends
up with APNG support, except, of course, it doesn't; it just ends up
with users complaining their PNG isn't moving.

But there is widespread support in a certain subset of the application
space, and I was aware of that when I made the "near death" comment.
There was been widespread support for some time, yet last time I
looked I couldn't find that much use of it.

Support is the first step, but the proof of the usefulness of
something is only obtained when people actually the feature!

Quite; I don't understand the point Chris was trying to make. APNG is
done, now it lives or dies on its own merits.

I don't understand the point about RGB TIFF either; what's wrong with
RGB TIFF? It supports a variety of compression methods, it is highly
extensible and can, if I understand correctly, support non-rectangular
pixel grids including grids where each pixel holds only one channel (R
or G or B); it seems to be ideal for the purposes it is used for.
