PNG is intended to support color formats commonly used on the web (especially to compete with single-frame GIF, and to some extent with JPEG) and in general purpose imaging applications. It seems like DNG is designed for this sort of image. If the PNG specification supported raw bayer images then hardly any software would support that subformat, which would result in failure. PNG seems like it is "done" and mature with the exception of perhaps supporting additional optional chunks. Something I am interested in is support for Zstandard compression (http://facebook.github.io/zstd/), which appears to be a worthy alternative (much more speed and better compression ratios) than zlib-based compression. The format/implementation is still young, but seems quite compelling.
