Trouble scanning with Canon MF8280

Hi,

I have tried for some time to scan from a Canon i-Sensys MF8280Cw. To 
exclude network issues the device is now connected to USB.
It is found by both sane-find-scanner and scanimage -L, detected as 
MF8200C series device.
scanimage -d test -T passes.
simple-scan allows to select the device but starting a scan gives 
"Failed to scan: Error communicating with scanner."
I've set the environment variables as described in 
http://www.sane-project.org/man/sane.7.html and get the output below 
when using scanimage.
Any ideas why it's not working?
