I'm the author of sane-airscan :-) For some reasons sane-airscan is not part of the SANE project (which means it doesn't share SANE repository at Gitlab, uses its own release cycle etc), but it is 100% SANE-compatible and works as "native" SANE driver, when installed. On most distros its installation happens automatically when SANE is installed. So if its installation required some manual action from you, it is probably specific to your Linux distro.
