Certainly not dead, just in the process of getting a bit of a makeover,
notable porting to GTK3. Backends release just went out of the door and I'm
currently trying to get some progress on xsane done ready for a release soon

Perhaps we should concentrate on getting a frontends release before then? I
will see what is left to do.
