Hello!

Which sodipodi version?
In latest version it depends whether it has picked up
Xft1 or fontconfig during build AFAIK. Either one is
needed for reading font database, but Xft1 has to have
connection to X server.
I cannot tell by heart, which library available binary
packages are using.
