Yes, I prefer the Inkscape UI, it's more like what I'm used to. But Sodipodi is the original, and to me, it represent stability. They just wanted an (irresponsibly?) faster release cycle and patch-submission guidelines. I think the menubar would actually work better in sp than gimp, since the canvas size is bound to be bigger in many (or even most) projects. I gimp, I often work with images that are < 100 pixels wide, in which case the menubar wastes space.
