Hi all,

I've (finally) got the two things I needed to start hacking on Y: a decent Linux
box and permission to do it. With any luck I'll be able to contribute something
worthwhile to the project.

Here are the thing I know I need/should/want to do, in no particular order:

Make sure Y is 64-bit clean.

Implement a shared memory transport mechanism -- should give local apps a bit of
a speed boost.

Port gvim.

Implement a screen lock.

Get a list of every known widget on the face of the earth, and use it to:
* work out the simplest set of primitives required to make it possible to build
every widget
* work out which need to be implemented for v1.0

Come up with a way of doing themes which does not preclude building a hardware Y
terminal.

Work out the API for video playback.

Work out the sound API -- will need to coordinate it with the above.

Build all the regular desktop apps (file manager, etc).

Remote viewports, input devices etc.

XFree86/X.Org driver stealing.

Port Gecko (probably as a widget), then firefox+thunderbird.

GL support.

X protocol emulation.

Suspend/resume of entire Y sessions.

===

Tomorrow (well, later today as it is now), I'll reply to this with my ideas on
_how_ to do all these things...

Cheers,

Phil

If it's worth doing, than it's worth spending a few minutes thinking which is
the best way to do it.
