Mark and I have had some chats about usability in general and how to apply it to
the file manager in particular. I find it relatively difficult to formulate the
plan in text only -- I've only ever explained it face-to-face, so I think I'll
need to produce some kind of a document with pretty pictures before it will
make sense to anyone else.

I don't think we want to do things that way (or at least if we do things the way
I think we should, it won't be stable by this October). It's hard to design a
good API if you do it in a vacuum. What we need is for someone to build some
throwaway prototypes of the essential apps and document what API they would
like to have to make the GUI part of their coding a doddle. Ideally we need a
few people doing this so we have a reasonable chance of finding something most
people will find relatively intuitive.
This is mostly design and application-architecture work.

I was a student at IC when Mark started this up. We (Mark, Dave, Nick and I)
had hashed out the outline of the project in fairly vaporous terms a bit before
the final-year-project season, but Mark was the first person to actually produce
anything worthwhile. At the moment I have a pretty good idea of where we want
to get to and where we are.
I'm a full-time professional C programmer, hence the need to get permission
before I could work on Y. I reckon on being able to spend about half a day per
week on Y. In the past, Mark has tended to outstrip me in terms of lines of
usable code produced per unit time; but that all seemed to change when he got
FF XI...
