Agreed.  But when the Foobar3000 image format is introduced, but the Y
server doesn't support that format, there should be a fallback (maybe
re-encode the image as PNG or JPEG before sending to the nonsupporting
server?).

I imagine the same questions will come up when thinking about video, and
what about audio transport?
