Sony Clie PEG-S360 & Redhat Linux 8.0

HELP! - LOL

I need more brains on this one as I have not been able to figure this 
one out on my own. As the subject line states, I have a Sony Clie 
PEG-S360 palm device. It runs Palm OS version 4.0. I have Redhat Linux 
8.0, freshly installed and not updated (as yet).

I'm trying to think of all things I have done to try ang get this to 
work.

* Added ln -s /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/pilot

* Checked /var/log/messages
This reports the same entries that everyone else posts on their web 
sites when the Hotsync button is pressed. The system "sees" the palm, 
lists it connected to ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1, attaches the converter, etc. 
etc. etc.

* Checked permissions in /dev/pilot and /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1. 
They are as follows:

* I've checked and doublechecked my settings on the palm.

Nothing works here. J-Pilot keep telling me to press the hotsync button.
I've also tried to get a ppp link to work using this command:

/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/pilot 115200 192.168.0.1:192.168.0.2 silent local 
persist -detach

The results of running this command after pressing the "connect" button 
on my palm is that ppp1 is established but the palm never "connects." 
It stops at "signing on."

Please help me find out what I'm missing.
