Florian Boor posted a message about 'lua' a lightweight scripting environment that can interface to gtk2, etc... that looks somewhat interesting. I don't have an answer on the desktop integration stuff, but I'll add my fuel to the fire :) - any primers on this?

You can write some xxx.desktop files in /usr/share/applications/. Take a
look in some .desktop-files. The Exec-line is the most interesting line.
In this line you can input command, which you want to run if you tap on
this icon.
