In its current form unstable ought to be reasonably safe to use.

As far as I'm concerned, those particular plans date back to March/April
2007 (although the discussion started much earlier - back in March
2006) and heavily depend upon a few other things falling into place,
most importantly a new toolchain and the availability of the new dev
cluster.

The basic idea was that Familiar would need to take a few steps back in
order to make significant progress again. It would result in a major
overhaul - leading us back to a package-centric development model
(unlike the tree/snapshot based OE model) as well as towards a modern
distro that's up to current standards (as defined by mainstream
distros).

Since April my schedule has changed quite a bit, for a few months I've
had to drop off the net completely. As a result I haven't talked to
George for a while, so I'm not sure about the current status of the
aforementioned infrastructure bits.

In any case I won't be able to make any contributions in the near future
(until mid-October) and even for the time thereafter it's not yet clear
whether I'll be able to devote much time to Familiar related activities.

Long story short, I'm still lurking on this list (and familiar-dev for
that matter) and depending on where the journey called life leads me as
well as a number of other factors I may or may not return.
