Right. The iPAQ won´t run without internal battery. There is no circuit or
bypass, that swaps between power-supply and battery, so you are
simultaneously recharging the battery and consuming capacity. If a cell is
broken, your iPAQ does not get the power from power supply, which runs
through the cells. That’s why a jacket only helps if at least *SOME*
capacity of the internal cells is left. The jacket permanently recharges the
internal cells and keeps this little capacity up.

 

Be careful, when connecting the power supplay directly to the contacts of
the battery. Requiered data for recharging electronical devices is different
from those required to run them.

Even if battery is totally empty, it should't prevent ipaq from starting,
right? If it does, can I fake ipaq to think it has the battery, although it
does not have it connected? (I don't need battery)

When I remove the internal battery, there is no sign of life whatever.

I must repectfully disagree. Li-Ion batteries do no respond well to being
allowed to go totally flat. . .and flat they will go whether the  batt
switch is on or off. They generally will self-discharge as much as ten
percent per day. I don't know what condition your battery was in when you
left it into "retirement", but this  may well have been it's 'death knell'. 
   Changing the battery on a 3600 is relatively trivial, and cheap. There
are complete picture instructions on the 'net'. There's no realy danger of
leaving it a brick since you have already flashed Familiar onto the ROM.
