assistive technology using familiar

Hello all,

Last January/February I made some posts to the lists about a design 
project that I was working on using Familiar. I was waiting to hear some 
more comments about the results of the project before posting again, but 
that was supposed to happen back in July so I doubt that I will ever get 
them.

For my senior design project we used Familiar to design an assistive 
technology device for people with cognitive disabilities and entered it 
into a design competition for the RERC-ACT (www.rerc-act.org). We based 
the design on an hx4700 with Familiar 0.8.4 and Opie.

The basic design was a simplified user interface, speech recognition 
(using PocketSphinx), and GPS tracking. The GPS was done through an 
external module attached to the PDA using Mologogo. We were able to get 
everything completed to a prototype level so that the interface was much 
more simple and applications could be accessed using voice commands.

We ended up placing fourth in the competition.

I did end up finding a bug in the kernel driver for the audio codec in 
which it did not detect a headset mic, which I "fixed" by adding 
debugging print statements (must have been a delay problem). I posted 
this fix to the kernel list, but the patch obviously was just a hack so 
I don't think that it anyone ever had a chance to follow up on it. Now I 
know what I'm doing and could fix it, but I don't have a device, so if 
someone is interested in this let me know and I'll send you what I have.

email to me directly. I should have it all backed up somewhere still.

Other than that I just wanted to say thanks to the community and 
developers for a great project.
