Unresponsive bootloader serial console, adding sys calls to kernel

Hello, #1) I've recently come into possession of two used iPAQs and would like to put Familiar on them. Going from Windows Mobile to 0.8.4 on the first went without a hitch. The second already had 0.8.0rc1. It loads into GPE fine, but we don't have the passwords for the system and would like to start from scratch. However, the joystick + reset button will make the iPAQ vibrate, then freeze - no Tux logo screen. Pressing the mail button does not cause any serial comm. Serial comm is not completely broken for the device, as the following comes up upon GPE login screen (though it does not accept keystrokes): Familiar Linux 0.8.0-rc1 h3900 tts/0 h3900 login: Is the bootloader slightly busted? If so, are there any means of wiping the device? #2) We are going to try to add kernel support for performance counter read/writes via additional sys calls. I've grabbed the build tree - any advice on modifying/rebuilding the kernel?
