Installation and use

Hello,
  I just decided to try to install familiar on my old hp3800.  When I say just, I mean 5 days ago of trying to get it to work.  I think this counts as a travel log...
 
I got the backup made and copied to main computer according to the instructions.  I then downloaded and copied the jjf file into the pocketpc.  I restarted the boot loader and happily had myself a linux box on my pocketpc.  I then realized that there was absolutely no way to transfer files to the pda.  
 
I tried the instructions for setting up the pda for usb (i have no serial port on my desktop)  but I could not load the new files into the PDA.  I tried using my wifes SD card, but it did not work.  
 
I then went and found a older computer with a serial port (win 2k no possibliity of using it with linux as it does not have a network card and the usb stick only works with windows).  I succeeded in using the tty terminal to get to talk to the pda, but I could not transfer files.  Still stuck.  I then decided to take the PDA to work.  
 
I should mention here that half the instruction files have dead links in them and I had to use the cached files from google to find instructions.  But sometimes the links would show up, but it was extremely difficult to find the way.
 
At work I found the nice page of how to connect the device to w2k.  I went through all the steps and got a network connection set up for PPP.  I can do ipconfig and see that it is there and has been assigned a ip address.   But the network connection will no do anything.  I can ping it.  But it will not accept an ssh, tty, ftp or any other request.  I also found the nice page that you can download linux.inf and then connect with a usb cable.  This fails with the error that software is missing.  Also I cannot put the files on the PDA as I cannot connect the PDA.
 
I then decided to just try with a linux distribution.  I downloaded ubuntu, installed it.  fought with it to get it to connect to my network, and then tried to connect through my usb port (do not have a serial), and ubuntu could not recognize the device.  I tried to use open sync and kitchen sync and had no joy.  I then got distracted by all the fun packages.
 
So I basically have a brick as I cannot sync the device, I cannot access the files, I cannot even download enough software to make this run like the basic setup of pocket pc 2002.
 
Can someone tell me what I need to do to get this device connected to anything?  I have the option of a w2k machine with cygwin and a serial port,  windows xp with a serial port, or ubuntu/windows xp with usb.  I would just like to be able to connect to the PDA and access it's filesystem.  Connecting it to the internet would be fun too, but just being able to load software on the machine would be enough.
 
Just one more question is it possible to use the PDA as a usb memory stick.  This would be enough for me to use.
