Weird lockups & other problems

I'm trying to get Intimate running on an iPAQ for use as an ARM development 
platform, and have been having some problems.

What I've got is:

 * iPAQ 3630 (according to the label on the back)
 * Single-slot PCMCIA sleeve
 * Grey Cell 2200 PCMCIA ethernet card (alas, 10Mb only; NE2000 compatible)
 * Big file server on an iMac running Debian, as NFS storage

No microdrive.

I'm using current Familar, Intimate and bootldr.

Familiar installed without a hitch. Nice work. Followed the instructions, 
everything went smoothly, and it works very satisfactorily.

Intimate was a bit more troublesome. I suspect that pure NFS isn't an option 
that's tested very much --- I had to hack the linuxrc.intimate script to get 
it to start. For reference, you can't mount NFS volumes unless EITHER portmap 
is running and lo is set up OR you use the nolock option. Also, the test to 
see if /dev/hda1 is available is broken. It's always available, even when 
there is no microdrive. It's just not openable.

Once past that it all installed neatly. The background music startled my cow 
orkers. Unfortunately what I now have is random lockups.

I don't know what's causing these yet, but the following message appears on 
the console shortly after bootup:

It might be related. I can reliably generate a lockup by trying to install 
the console-common package. The system freezes immediately after answering 
the question in the preinit script (to which I reply that I don't want it to 
touch my keymap). Unfortunately, not installing the package isn't an option 
as my target app also makes it lock up.

Another question: how do I set up a swapfile? The simple approach...

dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=64
mkswap /swapfile
swapon /swapfile

...produces:

rw_swap_page: bad swap file
Unable to find swap-space signature
swapon: /swapfile: Invalid argument

I've tried V0 and V1 swapfiles. Same result. Do I need a special version of 
mkswap?

And where do I get the patched kernel source?

Intimate looks good so far --- hey, it's Debian, you can't go far wrong with 
Debian --- and it's certainly easy to install. There's just the odd nagging 
problem...
