Well, I've just discovered that the system won't boot if I put the flash card 
in the second PCMCIA slot and card services are enabled --- it says:

cardmgr[243]: Card Services release does not match

If I try it without pcmcia-cs, it all seems to work and I get lots of 
/dev/hda entries; but none of them are openable. The relevant messages are:
