i was under the impression that the memory problems are more present when
using 2.6 kernels compared to 2.4 (both without tweaking memory
overcommitment).

another problem was gpe bloat - gpe 0.8.2 was worse than 0.7.2 (i haven't
tried 0.8.4 - according to the release notes they've optimised the memory
footprint).
