oh cool - nice that it works on this device now :-)

gpe-setbg is not used anymore to set the desktop background. The
background is handled by matchbox-desktop. The easiest way to select a
different background is to use gpe-conf (settings->appearance or run
"gpe-conf theme"). Another way to change background is to use the xst
command line tool.
