at the risk of simply further proving my ignorance of all
things desktop-like, i'll add:

not for me, at least not all the time. in addition to the
"Utilities" and "Other" menu entries (which contain panel apps,
and entries culled from /usr/lib/menus (with the debian-enabler
variable set), i get at least one extra, empty, menu item,
sometimes.

my entire vfolders directory consists of nothing but entries just
like Rene's "Scientific" entry above. i consistently get an
"Office" or an "Internet" menu entry (but only one of them) from
mb-applet-menu-launcher -- which i get depends on which comes
first in Root.order. putting other entries (e.g., System, or
Setting, or Multimedia) at the top of Root.order does _not_
necessarily make that entry appear in the panel menu, though i
can see no significant differences between the *.directory files.
i've only seen the problem with Office and Internet.

(there is a difference -- which probably isn't significant, and doesn't
change my observed behavior -- not all of the foo.directory files are
terminated with a final newline character. thought i should mention it.)

paul
p.s. i'm running 0.8.2, direct from debian, on a mipsel system.
