X runs but matchbox-window-manager will not display a window

Greetings.  I have been working on getting matchbox running on an embedded
PanelPC running FreeBSD 4.11 from a CompactFlash card.  Another guy and I
have 2 different images.  One is an image taken from an install done on a
different computer.  With some tweaks to the XFree86Config file and the
addition of penmount drivers for the touch screen, it works.  The other is a
stripped-down FreeBSD for embedded PCs.  Without a .xinitrc file, it loads
the default window manager (twm i think) just fine.  When I try to use
matchbox, the cursor changes from the 'X' to the arrow, but no window pops
up.  We are using matchbox-window-manager-0.9.5 and libmatchbox-1.7.  There
are no error messages.  Have you encountered this before and is there any
'verbose' mode to better diagnose what is going on?
