I purchased a TEW-429UB and made it work without a powered hub using 
only the interal Li-on battery. I requires some hardware and software 
modifications.

1) The kernel limit of 100mA needs to be removed. IIRC someone said they 
would release a patch for this soon.

2) The internal battery in the 429 is not connected when in USB Wifi 
adapter mode. The battery needs to be connected to the 3.3v supply for 
the radio. Some pictures and instructions should be ready soon.
