This has nothing to do with building the multithreaded variant or not.
It's because of linking with gcc instead of g++.

This is very valid reason to build the -mt variant, if you ask me.
People have flamed us for shipping that old Konqueror/Embedded, it would
be a pity of we couldn't ship the new one.

SDL is so broken wrt non-X platforms, it's probably not worth looking
into.

I agree. A complete new release might not be worth all the work in
tracking the huge amount of bugfixes since the branch went off.
