Having had a look at the rules files provided, it seems the symlink
problem is not the cause of the modules not being loaded (although
this is indeed a problem).

It seems that a rule is missing telling udev to modprobe the modules.

Excerpt from the udev RELEASE-NOTES file :
o udev handles now _all_ events not just events for class and block
  devices, this way it is possible to control the complete event
  behavior with udev rules. Especially useful for rules like:
    ACTION="add", DEVPATH="/devices/*", MODALIAS=="?*", RUN+="/sbin/modprobe $modalias"

It seems to work much better with such a rule.
