gcc versions?

I'm working my way through the openembedded cookbook for setting up a build environment. I'm interested in OZ for a tosa, and I think that the recent releases are based on 2.6 kernels. The OE pages say that gcc 2.95.3 is required for the 2.4 kernel line, but it's not clear what required/ok for the 2.6 line. Am I asking for a lot of headaches if I build with the 3.3.2 tarball from www.openzaurus.org? Can I build the kernel w/ 2.95.3 and the userland w/ 3.3.2?
