More followup from myself.  This should end up in the archives and
maybe save someone from the headbanging I went through.  I've added a
comment on the PossibleFailures page, please feel free to correct it
if I didn't get it right....

This seems to be a well known issue with gcc 4 and qemu, newer qemu
releases even complain if you try to build them w/ gcc 4.

It's also been tripped over and discussed on an openembedded mailing
