Moving default packages to SD

Hi,
I've installed OpenZaurus (Opie flavour) on an SL-C1000, but due to the
somewhat limited root partition size I'm a bit wary of storing things
like my email on the root since I don't know how much will get stuck on
the disk after being downloaded.
I'm assuming there's nothing special about most of the default packages
which are part of the image, in the sense that they can be deleted and
moved around as normal? If so, is there an easier way of migrating an
application from the root partition to an SD card, other than removing
it and reinstalling with the appropriate option set?
Sorry for asking a daft question, but I wanted to confirm I'd understood
correctly before I mucked around too much. I'm not familiar with the
package system, and I'm not sure what setting the target to "SD card" in
the GUI actually does in terms of installing the package (passes some
sort of "root dir" option to the installer?)
