Slash on external media on a collie

I have an SL-5500 which up until recently I had flashed with oz and
worked grand until I tried to install something, However, now I have a
much more spacious SD card and decided to put / unto the card.

So, I reflashed the machine with a 64-0 image (it runs fine)
and from
http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.4/images/collie/tarballs/
I downloaded the opie-image (also tried the bootstrap-image) and used
altboot to install it directly unto the sd card.
However, attempting to boot this gives the error that in the script
/etc/altboot-menu/15-bootsd test, mkdir, mount, grep, awk and echo could
not be found. It then hangs.
This can be fixed by running
'cp -r /boot /opt /sys /var /usr /lib /sbin /etc /bin /mnt/card'
but when starting, it stays at the console.

Now, less favorably, I tried to use a loop image. This seems to start up
ok until it tried to start opie:

Starting Opie.....
/opt/QtPalmtop/bin/qpe: symbol lookup error: /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/libqpe.so.1:
 undefined symbol:

OpenZaurus 3.5.4 collie tty1

collie login:

So, has anyone gotten a direct install to external media to work
properly on external media on a collie? Even if that did work, the
undefined symbol is liable to still occur. Will an 'ipkg upgrade' fix
it? Does that happen to some users, or is it just the universe scheming
against me?
