Whatever became of this work, Ed?  From the WE18 part above, it looks like
it might be possible to do WPA2 with your setup.  Can you comment on whether
or not you got your AP straightened out and doing WPA2 (or just WPA-PSK)? If
so, is your hardware the same as you listed in the OP or different?  I have
WPA2 set up on my WRT54G running White Russian.  Works very nicely.  If
you're still struggling with your router, then maybe I can help out?  I'm
trying to find WiFi hardware that will allow my new 3200 OZ machine to join
the network, and finding precious little in the way of such hardware.
