USB Host Mode

Thank you list members, and especially Justin for your very detailed replies
to my several posts.  In spite of Googling and searching list archives and
so forth, being new to this hardware, I guess I'll be asking a lot of
questions for awhile yet.

On that note...

Step 1 of:

reads:

"make sure that USB host mode is activated"

How do I do that?

When I ask in #zaurus, I get told that I need to go back to the Sharp ROM
which I suspect is not true.

With ps aux in a console, I can see a udevd --daemon process running.  Is
that what is meant in step 2 with "make sure udev is running".  My
understanding of udev is that it's a kernel process, so if it's not the
daemon that step is referring to, then i dunno how to make sure it's running
other than by booting the kernel.

I've done step 3 for my device (the LinkSys USB200M) by installing the mii
and asix kernel module packages, and did the depmod as per
http://bugs.openembedded.org/show_bug.cgi?id=871 too.

So the only thing that I'm not clear on is step 1 where I get the machine
into USB host mode.

I've tried plugging everything in (modules into kernel, host cable into Z,
NIC into host cable, ethernet cable into NIC), but nothing interesting
happens, and I do have a DHCP server running on the network.  What should
the interface be named?  I see a bunch of disconnected interfaces in the
Settings->Network tool:

bnep0
usbf
usbd0
usb0
eth1
eth0
atml0
wlan0
irda0
sit0
lo

and I tried manually starting all of them that weren't obviously referring
to something else like irda0.  The only interface with an IP address in that
list is lo.

Could it be that I'm over the 150mA current limit?  I don't have a powered
hub: just this cute little ethernet dongle thingie plugged as described
above.  No lights on it illuminate in any part of the process above.

Any thoughts?
