I agree, I've looked at the launcher code that deals with sync authentication and it's very confusing. My suggestion would be to just authenticate against the Unix login name / password of the user. We'd need to provide an easy way of setting the password within Opie, which is probably a good idea anyway particularly for users who want to log in remotely via SSH.
