Hmm. After a reboot (which I did not test before, silly me) I found that my 
patch had also affected the default rotation (!) It should have been obvious 
but I somehow missed that possibility.

Despite being close to the wire I took the decision to revert my earlier 
change and then fix the bug with a much less drastic workaround. I committed 
the change to CVS and moved the v1_2_3 tag up (see bug #1875 for the 
corresponding patch). I know I probably shouldn't have, but I didn't feel 
comfortable putting the release out with such a glaring regression as a 
default sideways rotation. (Erik - don't worry, I updated the tarball as 
well.)

Anyway we should now be back on track (phew!)
