I flashed 3.5.4-test5, went straight to the console & noticed the 
spacing issue; went to the display config & saw DejaVu_Sans was the 
current font which stuck in my memory as I didn't recall seeing that 
font name under any previous version I've run.

And for a fresh install is it the case there will be no default profile 
for opie-console, so that the FixedFont entries above should be being read?

If so, either there is a default profile & it specifies DejaVu_Sans, or 
the above process is not working as intended - at least I'm pretty sure 
I didn't screw anything up myself, mostly because I didn't have long 
enough to between flashing & noticing the issue ;)
