thanks for the fast reply, please excuse my delay.
I'm not quite sure if the SD-Card slot on my iPAQ 3870 fully qualifies as 
a (compact flash) storage card as used in your explanation and in the 
processes described in the FAQ. AFAIK there might be subtle differences 
between an SD card in the built-in slot and a compact flach card in a 
jacket (no CF slot directly in the 3870 model). If the cards act the same, 
I still wonder if I can rely on the correct setting of the compiler 
switches that were used to create the build (0.8.3?).

Do you by chance know about the 'default' setting of those compiler 
switches?

Hi,

You should be able to run your system from the storage card - although 
there are some provisos...

It appears that there are some cards that work and some that don't - I 
don't think there's a list set up at the moment, however, one of the 
developers is creating a program which runs on the ipaq and gets the 
diagnostic information that the developers need to adjust the system to 
work on the card - initial versions of the program should be available in 
the next couple of weeks.

For example, I'm running from a compact flash on my HP 2210, however, I've 
got to use a 128Mb card, because my main 512Mb card won't run...

You need access to a linux PC (possibly using a 'live' CD) - because you 
need to re-partition your card into a 5Mb FAT partition and the rest as a 
linux ext2 partition - once thats done, you copy the necessary files onto 
the two partitions.

Once the whole thing runs (by 'clicking' on a windows pocket PC program 
that is one of the files on the 5Mb fat partition), it wipes out the 
memory of the ipaq, and installs linux - your ROM is unaffected. However, 
if you reboot / exit - it is just as if you've done a cold reset - all 
your data from the iPaq's memory is erased (diary,contacts etc).

I don't know what the support is like for the 3870, however the guys on 
the 2210 list are very responsive - I'm assuming that the images for the 
2210 won't be compatible with the 3870 - but you could ask....

Most current iPAQs come with an integrated SD-Card slot. 
Q2: Would it be possible to boot [Familiar|WinCE|WhateverOS] from the 
SD-Card? 
Q3: How would I proceed to succeed?
